Labour MPs and unions are pressuring the government to legislate for a stricter cap on political party donations

At the press conference in Cardiff, Colin Mackay from STV said the memorandum of understanding signed today says Westminister is coming to an end. (See 11.20am.) How was that going to happen, he asked.

John Swinney, the Scottish first minister, said there was now “an accepted approach within Scottish politics” that “the people of Scotland must have the opportunity to express their view on the constitutional arrangements for Scotland.”

I think it’s becoming more and more clear to people that we need a major reset within these islands.

In the past, Andy Burnham himself, as the new prime minister, has said that Westminster isn’t working for people. I agree with him. I agree with him very much.

In the Irish case, Westminster rule came to a fairly abrupt end for most of the island some time back. But we still have the question of the six north eastern counties to attend for.

The political landscape across these islands is changing.

For the first time ever, people across these islands have first ministers in Scotland, in Wales and in the North of Ireland who are all committed to independence from the United Kingdom.

Our nations have the right to self-determination. No Westminster government has the right to block democracy or undermine the principle that our people will decide their own future.

We recognise that our parties have different constitutional positions and that each nation will determine its own future in its own way and in its own time.
