Prime minister spoke to press while on visit to a Sainsbury’s supermarket this morning

Burnham was asked by reporters whether he was a Dolly Parton fan, as tributes pour in for the country music legend who died yesterday at the age of 80.

The prime minister said:

“I was a huge fan of what Dolly did around literacy around the world. I was culture secretary when her libraries were first coming through and the books that went into communities across Britain, you know, what a legacy to leave.

And it was so moving to hear about her dad and how that experience made her want to give back so much. So, yeah, she leaves that legacy as well as obviously great music that people will treasure for ever.”

It’s why, within days of taking office, I announced that we would remove VAT off electricity bills to give people that little bit of help.

That kicks in from October.
