The Department of Education is taking steps to strip the American Bar Association of its power to accredit law schools, reports the Wall Street Journal, a move that administration supports say is meant to break a “cartel” in higher education while detractors describe as an attack on the legal profession and a political stunt.
“Any final decision to reject the ABA is two steps and several months away; the outcome isn’t certain,” reports the WSJ. “The Education Department’s initial recommendation goes next to a panel that reviews accreditors, which then makes a recommendation to Undersecretary of Education Nicholas Kent.”
